3 Nov 1917: U-boat captain Claus Lafrenz captured
Captain Lieutenant Claus Lafrenz was captured when his submarine UC 65 was torpedoed by British submarine C15 in the English Channel. Five of the crew survived while 23 died. Lafrenz had been born and bred on the island of Fehmarn which lies in Baltic Sea, but is connected to the mainland by a bridge. He was born in 1887 making him 30 years old at the time of his capture. When interrogated by British Naval Intelligence Lafrenz claimed to have studied at the University of Edinburgh. The archivists at the university could find no record of this.
Meanwhile in Flanders, Alfred Götz, a second lieutenant and stormtrooper, was captured at Passchendaele.
