Advent to Christmas

"Die Verwaltung und Küche, die Kunstvereinigungen des Lagers und einzelne Mitglieder der Wohngemeinschaften entfalteten eine fieberhafte, meist geheimnisvolle Tätigkeit. Schon trafen aus der Heimat die Weihnachtspakete und -briefe ein; wir fühlten mit frohem Herzen die liebenden Hände, die sich nach uns streckten. Mit Sorge blickten wir auf das trübe, feuchte Wetter, und schauten sehnsüchtig nach dem Weihnachtsschnee aus. Er kam. In feierlichem Glänze lag in den Feiertagen das weiße Tuch über unserem Lager, über all den Bergen und in den Tälern. Die Messen verwandelten sich unter dem reichen Laubschmuck in grüne Zweighallen. Am Abend des 23. Dezember leitete uns das Orchester mit seinem Weihnachtskonzert in die Feststimmung hinein." (p. 213)

The camp administration and the kitchen, the musical and artistic societies and individual inhabitants of the barracks all became caught up in a feverish flurry of mostly secretive activity.  Christmas parcels and letters from home had already started to arrive; with joyful hearts we felt the arms of our loved ones reaching out to us.  We looked anxiously out at the gloomy, damp weather, scanning the sky in hope of Christmas snow.  It came.  Over Christmas, a white blanket covered the camp and the surrounding hills and valleys with a celebratory glow.  The mess barracks were transformed by verdant canopies of abundant festive greenery.  On the evening of December 23^rd, the orchestra’s Christmas concert marked the start of our celebrations and brought Christmas spirit into the camp.
