In Search of Raikeswood Camp

While things have been quiet on the blog since our translation interns finished their work in April, the project has been busy in other ways:

In June we hosted a visit day and workshop for participants in a project to rediscover the site of the camp.  The ‘In Search of Raikeswood Camp’ project, led by Upper Wharfedale School, is funded by the HLF and will give participants the opportunity to carry out archaeological investigation on part of the Raikeswood site this summer.  Participants were invited to the University for a day that included:Capture

  • Keynote talk on Germans in the First World War, by Prof. Frank Finlay;
  • Workshops on using primary sources and understanding diaries as historical resources, with Dr Stephan Petzold and Dr Caroline Summers;
  • An afternoon of independent research using original sources of information about the camp, culminating in some very impressive presentations.

We are also preparing for the ‘In Search of Raikeswood Camp’ event at Skipton Town Hall on Tuesday 12th July, 7-8.30pm.  This event will be a celebration of the dig project and will feature an update on the translation project: do come and hear more if you are interested!

Upcoming project events also include talks for Wharfedale German Circle in August, and for Leeds Anglo-German Club in September.
