Alfred Schröder came from the town of Duisberg, a major centre in Germany's iron and steel industry. On 28 July 1917 he was captured near the village of Langemark which is a few miles to the north-east of Ypres. He was  20 years old and a second lieutenant. He had severe gunshot wounds to his right arm and left forearm. He was sent to hospital in Dartford and arrived in Skipton in September 1918.
