Summer Concerts

As Proms season continues, the diary shows that the period from July to September was one of increased music-making in the camp:

“Noch war die Auswahl der vorzutragenden Musikwerke dem technischen Können der immerhin recht begrenzten Gesamtzahl der Spieler anzupassen. Das Orchester bestand aus 8 Violinen, 2 Bratschen, 1 Cello, 1 Baß, 1 Flöte und 1 Klavier. Zur Wiedergabe gelangten spielbar zurechtgesetzte Operphantasien, kleine Solis und Proben der heiteren Muse. Dem Streben nach begehrenswerteren Zielen machten die Reprisals ein Ende, die der Engländer höchst mißlicherweise dem Lager auferlegte. Mit ihnen wurde jeder frohe Instrumentenklang zum Schweigen verdammt.

Juli, August, September 1918 brachten erneut eine Anzahl anspruchlos heiterer Konzerte, mit ihnen die stetig wachsende technische Gewandtheit der Spieler. Das Bestreben, in vertrauten Klängen auf Stunden den Alltag des Lageraufenthaltes zu bannen, war von schönem Erfolg gekrönt. ” (p. 183)

The selection of musical works that could be performed was still determined by compatibility with the still limited skills of the assembled players.  The orchestra consisted of 8 violins, 2 violas, 1 cello, 1 double bass, 1 flute and 1 piano, and was able to delight the muse by successfully rendering playable arrangements of operatic fantasies, short solos and other rehearsed material.  This striving towards noble ends was put to a stop by the disagreeable disciplinary reprisals that the English imposed on the camp, which condemned to silence any sort of joyful music-making.

July, August and September 1918 brought with them a new surge of easy, cheerful concerts as the technical abilities of the players increased steadily.  Our efforts to use familiar melodies to ward off the everyday dullness of life in the camp, at least for a few hours, were crowned with glorious success.
